The digital photography age has changed the photography industry in many ways. When I started photography it was with medium format film cameras, the negatives were the only original and they always stayed in the photographers possession. During this time period, my couples displayed portraits and pieces of art on their walls from their wedding day along with having a beautiful custom designed album. Everyday they got to enjoy the images on the wall and have a tangible product to hold in their hands. With digital photography, duplicates of negatives can now be endless, couples started to want to have copies of the originals too. What also started to happen was couples not only wanted the digital negatives. Their plan was to design their own book or print their own images. The DIY age was beginning and with all the new technology it seemed like a simple task to do yourself. What really happened was most couples never did anything further with their wedding images, the disc was copied and likely stored on their computer, and that’s were it stopped. The art of photography showcasing their images on their walls or having a tangible product in their hands was overtaken by images stored on a hard drive. I read something that someone said that our generation is “the most photographed generation, but the least printed generation.” Throughout the past 12 years that my business stepped into the digital age, it had to make some changes and adjust to the “new” ways. Not knowing whether or not my clients were “really” going to finish out the task of DIY really bothered me. I honestly felt like they would likely be cheating themselves out of the true enjoyment of photography by not having an album or art on the wall. Offering the digital negatives was a hard pill to swallow, so I had to make the change. Before I did that, I was only going to be doing it in a way that was to their benefit. I wanted my clients to not let go of the importance of having a tangible product….their album and art on their walls. Looking back now, I see the tradition of having an album come back into request and I’m proud to say throughout this last decade that I have continued to give my clients what they deserve which is to display art on their walls and have a custom album to hold, along with having the digital negatives from their wedding day.
